The climb takes 4-6 hours and passes through four gopurams (temple towers). Alternatively, take the ghat road to Tirumala (700m above sea level). Check into accommodation. Evening: Visit the Sri Vari Museum to understand the temple's 2,000-year history. Preparation: The climb requires good fitness; carry water and wear comfortable footwear.

Darshan, rituals & Padmavati Temple
Rise at 2:00 AM to join the Suprabhatam (waking-up ceremony) queue and watch the temple come alive as the deity is awakened with Vedic chants. Darshan can take 3-6 hours depending on the queue. Visit the Varahaswamy Temple on the temple tank, where Vishnu's boar incarnation is worshipped, and, if you wish, offer your hair at the Kalyana Katta tonsuring centre as an act of ego-surrender. Collect the famous Tirupati Laddu as prasad. In the afternoon, descend to Tiruchanur for darshan at the Padmavati Amman Temple; by tradition the consort of Lord Venkateswara is visited after the main deity to complete the pilgrimage. Shop for Tirupati wood carvings and kumkum before departure.
